Broodmares

Sambourne Stud has 21 broodmares. Many of our broodmares are ex racers or mares that have proved themselves either in competition or as a dam. Most are registered Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods or Cobs and have come to us for a second chance in life where owners have not wanted them to be put to sleep or passed around. All are fit and healthy.

We genuinely believe in breeding quality and our progeny results speak for themselves with many of our customers coming back for siblings or another project because they are so impressed with what we breed.

Any scars and other unsightly defects due to an accident or injury are not a problem to us and we are always open to any potential broodmares you may wish us to consider.

Golden Secret (Goldie) is a 15.3hh Chestnut 2010 Thoroughbred Mare by Sakhee's Secret who was trained by Hughie Morrison.  Sakhee's Secret won five of 11 starts, with his July Cup win the highlight. He stood at Whitsbury Manor Stud in England for six seasons before moving on to Allevamento Si Fra in Italy, where he was champion sire in 2019 and 2020 and passed away in November 2021.  Goldie has had six filly foals to various stallions such as Showcasing, Swiss Spirit, Adaay and Havana Gold.  Goldie has a lovely temperament and is very easy to do.  Goldie sadly was not in foal for 2025 so we have covered her again with Sambourne Kratos with the hope we get lucky for next year in the Spring of 2026.

Moment De Reve (Mo) has come to us as it was discovered whilst she was in training, she was too slow for racing.  She is a lovely stamp of a thoroughbred mare standing at 16.3hh and is by Equiano who stands at the Irish National Stud and out of mare by New Approach and born in 2019.  Super chilled she has a lovely temperament and is so relaxed and settled in really well.  Mo was sadly not in foal for 2025, we felt convinced she was in foal so unsure if she lost it somewhere or simply did not take.  We have covered her in March 2025 and she has been confirmed in foal for 2026.

Excellent World
Excellent World

Erin is a 2013 16.1hh Bay Registered Weatherbys Thoroughbred by Excellent Art a stallion who won the National Stakes and the Mill Reef Stakes and being placed in both the Prix Morny and the Railway Stakes as a two year old and out of a mare called Granny Kelly who is American bred.  Erin ran twenty five times and was placed ten times but never won as a race horse and then retired to Norman Court Stud (Salisbury) where she had a filly foal to Sixties Icon in 2019 then another filly in 2021 to their other stallion Bungle in the Jungle.  She was covered on the 29th April 2021 by Rumble in the Jungle was subsequently sold to Mickley Stud in December 2021.  Erin then produced a filly (chestnut) foal in April 2022 which was sold at Tattersalls in December 2022 and was covered in May 2022 by the stud's resident stallion Massaat but did not prove to be in foal and was then sold as a project horse to retrain.  Erin loved being brought back into work but sadly her previous owner was unable to continue and asked if we would like to provide her a home as a broodmare which we were happy to do.  Erin has a lovely, laid back personality, makes friends very easily and since her arrival in November has settled in exceptionally well.  Erin has been covered by Sambourne Kratos and we hope to have a foal from her in 2024.

Minnie
Minnie

Minnie arrived at our stud on Sunday 11th April 2021 to join our broodmares at Sambourne Stud.  Minnie stands 15.2hh and is by Compton Place the same stallion that Petal (One Cool Pet) is by out of mare called Splicing which is by Sharpo.  Minnie did race twice, once in 2013 and again in 2014, both were short flat races on the all weather and she successfully completed both races in last place!  None the less, we think she is a super mare, absolutely beautiful and sure to have a really smart looking foal.   Minnie was born in February 2011.  Minnie is due at the end of May 2025 for her foal.

Hugo
Hugo

If you buy a foal from us and have it delivered you will almost certainly meet Hugo.  Hugo is an 11.1hh Welsh Section A Gelding born in 2012 who is the Nanny at Sambourne Stud.  He is by Maesgwyn Hugo Boss and out of a mare by Littlewern Lyric.

Hugo travels with all the foals that are delivered for comfort and ease to make them relax and understand that their first journey being loaded is a lovely experience.  We have found this strategy really works well as all our foals turn out to be excellent loaders and travellers.

Rosie
Rosie

Rosie is a 2015 born 15.3hh Bay ex racehorse by Nayef out of mare called Roscara.  She finished racing in 2018 and the owners have asked that she now continues the rest of her days as a broodmare at Sambourne Stud.  She is very well put together, very intelligent, agile, athletic and learns exceptionally quickly.  Rosie has turned out to be a great mum, initially she was quite confused but relaxed and took to it really well.  Rosie was not in foal for 2025 but we have covered her and are awaiting a scan to confirm if she is in foal or not for 2026.

Pumpkin
Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a 16.1hh Registered Thoroughbred Chestnut mare born in 2014.  She is by Sakhee out of a mare by Bahri.  She was bought to race under National Hunt rules but unfortunately she developed lameness around the coffin joint believed to be some sort of ligament problem.  Her owners decided due to her beautiful sweet nature that it would be best she came to Sambourne Stud to live her life out as a broodmare.   Pumpkin has a skewbald filly foal on 15 April 2025 with two blue eyes, read about the foal under Sambourne Aphaea.

Milly
Millicano (Milly)

Millicano (Milly) is a 16.0hh Heavy Weight buckskin Mare part Shire/Warmblood and TB Cross born in 2012 and has a 50% chance of producing a double dilute perlino foal.  Her sire is By Design a Czech Warmblood Stallion.  Milly trained specifically in dressage but unfortunately ended up injured and came to us to live her life as a broodmare. Milly is the mother of Sambourne Original Prankster, who is a double dilute Perlino colt who we will be using for stud to get dun or palomino foals.  Milly has had a dun colt foal for 2023 Sambourne Boreo and has been covered by Sambourne Kratos for a 2024 foal.

Madame Judge
Madame Judge

Madame is a 16hh Thoroughbred bay mare born in 2016 who briefly raced as a two year old but was not very successful.  She has come to us to live her life out as a broodmare.  Madame is very well bred by Lawman and of a mare called Madame Mere by Dalakhani which is the same family as the winning Derby stallion Oath trained by Henry Cecil.  Madame Judge had her colt foal on 8 May 2025.
